Exclusives Chapter 20 : Israel
|
|
|
| As
usual, the Israeli exhibitors were present at Aero India 2005 in full
strength, through a dedicated Israeli National pavilion. A range of newer products were revealed. |

Elta revealed
their latest debutant, the EL/M-2052 AESA radar at Aero India. Despite the
high profile, the rather inadequate exhibit of the model in a mere
corridor facing wall space left the radar, shockingly, mostly unnoticed. A
prototype set has been fabricated and is being installed on a fighter for
testing. If successful, this radar could kill just about every other set
in the world, in terms of exportability and capability. As expected, a
ridiculously high tracking capability of 64 targets, is given. In the air-to-sea
mode, the radar is supposed to acquire and track surface targets up to 160
nm away. There are over 1500 T/R modules in this antenna aperture - I know
because I counted! |

Aeronautics Defense Systems
presents
another debutant - the Dominator (A-701) UAV. This one is another Rutan Long-EZ
design with a 160 hp Lycoming pusher propeller. The 8x8 m UAV has an MTOW
of 800 kg.

A beautiful (and
no doubt, expensive) exhibit of Elisra's internal EW systems. The kit
consists of passive (RWR) and active (SPJ) subsystems. |

The
IAI-Gulfstream G-200 and Gulfstream G-5 Special Electronic Mission
Aircraft (SEMA). Armed bizjets always make for an interesting
setup. The G-5 configuration uses the EL/I-3001 Elint system. Looks
somewhat cramped inside despite the size of the G-5. |

ITALD (ADM-141C)
autonomous turbojet decoy with a standoff range of 160 nm. The flight
profile including the speed (Mach 0.4 to 0.8) and altitude ( 500-30,000 ft
) are programmable. The ITALD, combat proven in the wars against
Iraq, is just 92 inches long and weighs 380 lbs. Onboard sensors
include GPS and a radar altimeter for terrain following. |

The Sky Sheild
is an offensive air-to-ground jammer system for use in SEAD. The
Emitters seem to cover a 360º sphere. Like the EL/M-2052, this is another
decisive piece of military engineering. |

The Skylark IV
hand launched mini-UAV is currently under evaluation by the IDF. The
payload, developed by Elbit, weighs just 0.5 to 1 kg, the whole UAV
weighing just 4 kg. Powered by an electric motor, the Skylark has a 90
minute mission time. |

Aeronautics Defense Systems's
Aerostar (bottom), Aerolight (top) and Orbiter mini-UAV. The long
endurance (12 hrs) Aerostar, is in service with the IDF, US Navy and
Angola. |

IMI's PB-500-A1
LGB consists of a hard-target penetration warhead and a laser guidance kit
and is supposed to be similar in characteristics, to a Mk.83 GP
bomb. |

Python-5, Derby
and the SPICE PGM. The Derby has been selected to arm the Indian Navy's
Sea Harrier upgrade. The size of the AAM should facilitate for carriage on
dual rails. The SPICE uses an INS/GPS to reach a predestinated target site
and imaging plus scene matching for the terminal phase. When launched at
42,000 feet, SPICE can glide up to 60 km. An additional datalink is
optional. All targeting information including the flight path and scene
details are programmed into a detachable memory unit. |
