(Centre) Flat plate antenna for the ALH's Super vision SV-2000 maritime patrol radar. The Radar has the capability to detect and track airborne targets and sea surface targets under sea clutter at a range more than 50 nm. The system has been developed by LRDE. The lightweight planar Microstrip antenna array for ground radar applications, provides very high gain, ultra low side lobe levels over a very large bandwidth and uses a rectangular coaxial transmission network as it's feed network to provide for high power handling.

The Nishant is a multirole UAV that is primarily tasked with intelligence gathering over enemy territory and also for recce, surveillance, target designation, artillery fire correction, damage assesment, ELINT and SIGINT. Built to Indian Army requirements, it includes multi-mission Day/Night capability using advanced electro-optical payloads (CCD, FLIR and mini pan camera, SIGINT and laser rangefinder installed in a gimballed payload assembly) or the (unconfirmed) EL/M-2055 SAR/MTI UAV recon payload. Though not formally inducted, the Army is known to deploy the UAV. User trails were formally completed and serial production is ready to begin. The UAV has been developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) wheras the electro-optical payloads have been developed by the Instruments Research and Development Establishment (IRDE).

The Lakshya is a remotely piloted drone being used by the armed forces to provide realistic towed aerial sub-targets for live fire training. While the drone is already in service with the Indian Airforce(IAF) and Indian Navy (IN), the first batch for the Indian Army is undergoing production. The drone has a range of 600 km, a ceiling of 29,504 ft and a max speed of Mach 0.8. The Lakshya is all set for export with Israel negotiating for the system after extensive evaluation in November 2002. A battlefeild recon version of the drone was recently test flown.

The enigmatic Astra Active-BVRAAM. The missile is intended to equip the LCA and eventually all other types in IAF inventory. It weighs 154 kgs(250 kgs with launcher), has a diameter of 178 mm, a length of 3570 mm, a head-on range of 80 km and a > 15 km range in tail chase. The laser proximity fuse for the missile is in development.

Conceived as the powerplant for the LCA in the early nineties and developed by the Gas Turbine Research and Development Establishment(GTRE), the GTX-35VS Kaveri is a two spool, low bypass ratio turbofan consisting of a three stage fan and a six stage transonic compressor, both driven by single stage turbines. It handles an airflow ratio of 75 kgs/sec and has an overall pressure ratio of 21. The engine core known as the Kabini, which was conceived as a test vehicle to establish the flat rating concept of the Kaveri,has undergone high altitude tests at CIAM, Russia. The Kaveri is scheduled to fly on a test bed by the end of 2003 and is to be integrated into the LCA airframe by 2005-2006. Due to delays, the first limited series production variants of the LCA will have an uprated version of the General Electricl F404-F2/J3 engine.

Naval Physical Oceanographic laboratory(NPOL)'s mini sonobouy and RGB-75A Radio sonobuoy. The same divison produces the Advanced Panoramic Hull mounted Sonar(APSOH), Humsa sonar and Panchendriya submarine sonar for the Indian Navy.


An airborne ESM system capable of intercepting, detecting and classifying pulse, CW, PRF agile, Frequency agile and Chirp radars. It employs a modular approach facilitating deployment on a variety of platforms.It is capable of autotracking 64 tracks, 100% probability of interception, weighs 65 kg and has Built In Test Equipment (BITE). This system has been designed by Defence Electronics Reserach Lab(DLRL) of DRDO and is manufactured by Bharat Electronics ltd.

The PJT-531 Battlefeild surveillance radar-Short range (BFSR-SR ) developed by LRDE in a short period of 24 months. It is a man portable, battery powered J-band surveillance and acquisition radar capable of detecting crawling men at 500 m, moving groups of people at 5 km and a group of vehicles at 10 kms. It can track 50 targets in TWS mode and presents the information on a high resolution portable color PC display. The longer range version,the X-band PIT 530 BFSR-MR, can detect a group of moving people at 18 km,low flying helicopters at 25 km, moving vehicles at 40 km and an 155 mm artillery blast at 15 km.


BDL was established in 1970 for the manufacture of guided missile and allied defence equipment. It remains the country's prime agency for missile manufacture and is an ISO/NABL accredited company.

The Konkurs is a second generation ATGM manufactured under license from Russia. It weighs 25 kgs,has a range of 75 m - 4000 m and can penetrate an armour plating of >650 mm. BDL has also been manufacturing at around 1/3rd the price, the Milan ATGM(right) under license from Euromissile, France.In the background, one can notice the Feild level test equipment for the FLAME launcher - a man portable Milan launcher which was developed by BDL's inhouse R&D division. BDL has also developed a thermal sight for ATGMs, in association with El-op(IAI), Israel. BDL has also recently announced that it will take up the manufacture of the Matra MICA-RF AAM if the IAF chooses to purchase 125 new Mirage-2000-5 aircraft and for the purpose, has signed an agreement with MBDA Missile systems for the joint production of "any" new missile acquired by India.
